So this coming weekend brings with it the inaugural Kieran Quinn’s Teenage Theme Showcase in the Hawk’s Well Theatre. It is a continuation of the series of teenage theme nights which have taken place in the Model over the past 3 years, but will be on a bigger scale, featuring over 60 performers, including a choir and orchestra.
The theme this time is Film Music, so audiences can look forward to songs and themes from popular recent movies such as La La Land and Whiplash as well as classics like Shrek, The Lion King and A Beautiful Mind.
This teenage theme night series has always been one of the most rewarding projects in which I am involved. They have always been great, but I have often wondered how good they could get if we were to have proper rehearsal time.
Thanks to the generous support of EJ Menswear, we are about to find out! Their support has enabled me, along with Niamh Crowley, Dave Flynn and Sinead Conway, to put on an extensive rehearsal schedule with the teenagers over the past few months. We have had 3 all-day workshops, designed to teach the teenage musicians about aspects of music such as performance, arranging, microphone technique, stage presence and talking to an audience - Also to polish performances to a degree that they wouldn't have reached before, AND we have had great fun along the way!
Thanks must also go to Coolera Dramatic Society, Summerhill College, the Hawk's Well Theatre, Music Generation and the Sligo Academy of Music for their generosity in allowing us use their facilities and equipment.
The aim is to put on a top-level showcase featuring the best of teenage talent – for singers and instrumentalists alike. Having something like this to aspire to will hopefully encourage even more people to take up instruments, join musical groups and receive the many benefits that come with learning music in Sligo. On Saturday and Sunday we will see how close we have come to achieving this. I look forward to meeting some of you there.
The Inaugural Kieran Quinn’s Teenage Theme Showcase takes place on May 13th and 14th in the Hawk’s Well Theatre.
